Volvo Cars and Zenseact set up one of the largest data centers in the Nordics, powered by NVIDIA, to boost the use of AI in developing car safety software.

Gothenburg, September 5. In a strategic move to improve and accelerate the development of artificial intelligence, Volvo Cars-owned software company Zenseact announced today that it has invested heavily in NVIDIA technology to build one of the largest AI training centers in the Nordics. The large-scale project aims to ensure the continuous delivery of world-leading safety technology, reaffirming Zenseact’s position as Sweden’s leading AI company in an increasingly competitive global race.

In the automotive software industry, deep learning – an AI framework used for autonomous driving (AD) functionality – has gone from virtually non-existent to being used by all major players in the automotive industry. Today, everyone agrees on its potential to boost development efficiency and product quality.

Zenseact is acquiring the latest NVIDIA DGX systems – an AI supercomputing infrastructure optimized for large workloads – as an instrumental tool on the path to safe automation. Zenseact has been utilizing the NVIDIA platform for years, and the NVIDIA DGX provides the increased computational power necessary to train Zenseact’s AI models more efficiently.

“NVIDIA DGX systems will supercharge our AI training, and as a result, we’ll be able to innovate faster,” explains Hampus Lewis-Lück, Chief Financial and Digital Officer at Zenseact. “By leveraging NVIDIA technology and setting up our data center, we gain a quick path to developing high-performing AI, ultimately helping to make our product safer. That’s the endgame.”

In addition to offering the increased computational capacity needed for AI training, the new data center will enable several other aspects of automation software development. For instance, integrating these systems will help make the time-consuming human data annotation process (identifying and marking objects for classification and recognition) more efficient, allowing for more automated labeling – vital for training AI models. This enhancement not only speeds up the development cycle but also improves the overall quality and reliability of the software.

“Managing the massive amounts of data needed to safely train the next generation of AI-enabled vehicles demands data center-level compute and infrastructure,” said Norm Marks, vice president of automotive at NVIDIA. “With NVIDIA DGX, Volvo Cars and Zenseact gain supercomputing capabilities to help tackle critical automotive development challenges in a cost-effective, enterprise-ready, and easy-to-deploy solution.”

The NVIDIA DGX systems also help Zenseact create new synthetic datasets for training, based on “real” data. Using synthetic data and simulation means that AI models can learn from a broader range of scenarios than the real world can offer. This is not just a considerable efficiency gain; it dramatically advances AD technology developments.

“We already have the data, deep learning engineers, and an acknowledged research community relentlessly pushing new tech boundaries. With the new data center, we can harness all that potential. Our ambition is to always have a releasable state-of-the-art product, and that requires switching into overdrive,” Lewis-Lück concludes.
